Yes, Hungary does not have sea, but Lake Balaton is considered Hungary’s inner sea. In fact, it’s huge. One hour away from Budapest, is Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe. Before you buy your train ticket, decide what town to visit or stay at: it can be in the mountain region, which is notable for the vineyards (North Shore) or in the resort towns (South shore) (Siófok, Keszthely, Balatonfüred, Zamárdi).
I visited the South shore of Lake Balaton, Siófok, known as the Party Capital of Hungary. This town is very vibrant and beautiful. That’s why it attracts young people and is one of the busiest holiday destinations in Hungary. It has 17 km long coast, a lot of night clubs, gastronomic options, and private beaches. Most of the beaches here have grass instead of sand, and you must pay to enter. Also, Siófok is one of the first train stops from Budapest. The visit won’t disappoint you. Once there, you can walk the long coast, visit the lighthouse, the Siófok Water Tower, take a boat ride, visit Our Lady Church, or just relax on the grass to enjoy the beautiful vista.
