Do you remember Jacques Cousteau, that French oceanographer who produced those captivating underwater documentaries? The unforgettable explorer of our childhood, Jacques Cousteau, dove into the clear water of Ginnie Springs in 1974 and referred to it as the “forever visibility” (Springs Eternal Project). Ginnie Springs is one of the most beautiful springs you can find in Florida. It’s located on the Santa Fe River in High Springs, Florida, or 45 minutes up north of Gainesville. From Orlando, you must drive 151 miles (almost 3 hours) taking the I-75 or 2 hours (139 miles approx.). This is the fastest route with tolls. The water temperature in Ginnie Springs is 72 degrees all year round. The park is owned by the Wray family. Among the amenities, you find volleyball courts, a playground, picnic tables, pavilions, and a boat ramp where people can launch their boats. If you want to stay at the park, you have the option to rent the Ginnie Cottage. There is also a store where you can get snacks, food, and beverages, and pay for your admission ticket. Admission fees change according to the season.
Compared to other springs like Wekiva Springs ($6 per vehicle) or Rock Springs ($6 per vehicle), the Ginnie entrance fee is a little bit pricey. The adult price for the off-season is $15 and $20 during the high peak season. The park opens daily from 8:00 am and closes thirty minutes before sunset. Ginnie offers several activity opportunities like snorkeling, scuba diving, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, and paddle boarding. If you don’t bring your equipment, you can rent it out there. Be ready to have fun and to row against the current for a while.
If you are obsessed with blue and crystal-clear water, and beautiful nature, Ginnie Springs is the place for you.
